Public Domain…Sounds good. October 18, 2007

Filed under: Your Guess is a good as mine — admin @ 4:19 pm

Since everyone loves a good video from you tube or google, what about a public domain sound library? Enter Soundsnap.com , Your sound (hey, kinda like Your Stupid Blog.com cool) . This website not only has sounds but loops that you can use to make your own music.

It is a place where users can upload the sounds they create and share them with the rest of the world. It is not for songs or any commercial library stuff. They have a wide variety of stuff, buttons sounds to Drum samples.

Everything on the site can be used for free.

Secure from Within. (Home/personal use only)

Filed under: Your Guess is a good as mine — admin @ 1:30 pm

I ran across thislittle program the other day. Secunia scanner it appears to be “only” in beta but will continue to be a free tool. It will scan your computer and calculateyour personel Secunia System Score. Just what I need, another number. Any how, this number is based on to the security or lack there of in my PC. It goes in and checks each program that is on your pc that Secunia has a reference for. That is it keeps track of literally thousands of programs and when it finds that program on your computer it it matches the version numbers to check if your version number has any current vulnerabilities. The next step is to give you a link to the upgrade that you need to install.

I have used this type of software before, it was just just a version checker. This is a richer tool that give you a real reason for the updates. It works relatively fast, after a few minutes and it makes it clear what to do next.

The rason for the software is that Secunias’ mission is  to be a world leader in  being a “vulnerability intelligence provider.” The company started in 2002 and currently has 5 million vistor a year, according to the website.

You do need to be administrator privileges this should not be a problem on XP home, as most users are setup as an administrator. You can check this in the control panel under users.  The your OS(windows)must be up to date and you will need to have an internet connection to run the software. They want to raise security awarness, and this is a better way to control the amount of viruses that a computer can get, rahter than waiting to find out that you have a virus and have spread it to your friends and will loose or have lost all of the information on your hard drive.

I use this product and would recommended it to my friends and Family.

Open Source is out of Control! October 17, 2007

Filed under: Your Guess is a good as mine — admin @ 2:06 pm

I mean that in the best possible way. No Way! I just got an email from Eweek.com 10 things you should know about open source. http://www.eweek.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l=&s=25947&a=217105&po=2,00.asp?p=y The 11 thing that they fail to mention is that Open Source is Unbelievable. I’m sure that many of you have heard of FireFox or OpenOffice, when you start looking under the covers there is a whole world out there…

There next slide show that I went to was the The Most Important Open-Source Apps of All Time. Which lead me to a network scanning application, Website portal software, Database software, Etc.. You say what does this have to do with me I never “portal” or scan my network. Well, that is a good question. Even better if I had an answer. I can’t tell you what that has to do with you, but I can say what it has to do with me and that is that I will be able to offer a portal to my High School Class mates and scan my network all for free via open source software. This may not enrich your life, but it will someday soon and you will be a much better person for it.

Hopefully this will peek you interest and help you find a better way to live you digital life.

Let’s set the record straight I believe, like The Great Pete Townsend, (of the Who) “it(his music) had to reflect exactly what the audience wanted us to say. ” Your Stupid Blog , must reflect exactly what the audience wants it to say, hence this is Your Stupid Blog and not mine.
